Experts claim the largest problem with hurricanes is
complacency:
"we won't get hit where we
live"
anything over 80 degrees is favorable for hurricane
development.
"we don't live on the
water"
The force of hurricanes goes miles inland. In 2008 hurricane Ike
hit Galveston and some 30 miles away downtown Houston barely had any windows
left.
"if they hit here they will be
weak"
Isabel was a tropical storm when it hit our area and
look at the damage it did. Since then Bill, Alex, Wilma, and Earl have all been
near misses and were much stronger storms. And never have the water temperatures
been this high.
And my favorite....."that is what
insurance is for"
When a storm hits your window could break because your
neighbor left stuff in their yard and you did not have window protection. The
eye of the storm still has yet to pass once this could happen, so you will have hours of horizontal
rain blowing through the broken window. It will most likely be one of the
highest and largest windows, so just about everything in the house will become saturated.
I assure you, a call to your insurance agent is not going
to make this nightmare go away.
This is the beginning of a long drawn out process to get your
life back together.......skipping past the fact your house may now be back together, many personal items can never be replaced. In
the mail you get your insurance renewal with an increased premium, an
increased deductible or a notice of cancellation....now just
think how much better off you would be if the window had been covered by a
Florida approved hurricane product.
Insurance companies are not going to
loose money by insuring people that don't take steps to protect their properties
in Hurricane Zones. We all need to become good risk managers. Look at your
policy and see what your deductible is in the event of a named storm. Then get
a bid to determine what it will cost to protect your windows.....it is probably
less than you think.
The panic filled phone calls, I received while Earl was
approaching is what drove me to post this dialogue. People were
wanting me to zoom over and cover their windows, I explained the product was
custom made and it simply was not possible on such short notice. It tore me up
to tell these people there was nothing I could do for them.
I also got calls from people that had bought my panels ahead
of time, they had deployed their panels and were ready for the
storm.........what a difference in the well being those people felt.
"Be prepared, plan ahead, get a bid, then decide"
